Make Sure Your Insurance Covers Unseen Problems from Extreme Winter Weather

Winter is prime time in these parts for things to go wrong. The fluctuation in temperature from ‘warm enough to just wear a t-shirt’ to ‘full on hat and gloves weather’ can literally happen overnight. The same can be said for December and January when a warm-ish day can be followed by six inches of snow (or more) the next. All of this can lead to problems that you don’t have to deal with for most of the year. Now is the time to make sure your insurance covers unseen problems from extreme winter weather.

Freezing temperatures, icy rain, and heavy snow can cause a whole slew of damage to your property. The best approach is being proactive and heading off those damages before they even happen, where possible. You can limit your liability for the cost of those damages with some simple fixes. So, for instance, things like detaching exterior hoses, getting your trees trimmed, and clearing leaves from drains and downspouts can prevent a lot. When the temperature drops really low, you can turn faucets in colder parts of your house on so just a slow drip comes out. That way water is still moving through the pipes, and it will be less likely to freeze.

This article from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners offers a lot of insight into how to preemptively protect yourself and your home.

That’s not all you can do, though. Examining your current policy and updating it where needed can help as well. In the case of fire or other structural damage (which should be covered in your homeowner’s insurance policy), the cost of needing to relocate is not always included. Checking to make sure displacement coverage is included will help cover that cost. For auto insurance, if you or your passengers are injured in an accident in your vehicle, medical payments coverage will help pay for any hospital bills or medications needed to treat the injuries.

These are just a few of the things you can make sure you are covered for before anything bad happens. If you want to learn more ways to protect yourself, Leber Insurance Group is here to help you. Reach out today to discuss your policy and what can be done.
